The contract follows almost Dh6.5 billion worth of projects awarded to the company, which is a joint venture between the UAE’s Belhasa and Belgium’s Six Construct, in Abu Dhabi in recent months.

The project, which will be carried out in a joint venture with the Bahraini contracting company Haji Hassan, involves the construction of a 2.4km causeway on reclaimed land, which will link north Manama with the island of Muharraq.

The bridge will be the fourth crossing between Muharraq and the main island and will also provide access to the Bahrain Bay development and Bahrain Financial Harbour. Philippe Dessoy, the general manager of Besix, confirmed the contract award by Bahrain’s ministry of works.

Besix’s recent project wins in Abu Dhabi include a Dh5bn deal to build the Cleveland Clinic and a Dh1.5bn contract for ADNOC Tower. It is also chasing a Dh9.73bn deal to build a motorway linking the capital with Saudi Arabia in partnership with Abu Dhabi’s Al Jaber Group and Australia’s Macquarie Capital.

The contract for the 327km Mafraq-Ghweifat road is expected to be awarded next month.
