For architects this decade, building efficiency will replace grandiosity

0
On Jan. 4, the new decade's first day of business, grand openings of two extraordinary real estate projects were widely reported: the $8.5 billion, 18.5 million square-foot City Center complex in Las Vegas; and the $1.5 billion Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world's tallest skyscraper, standing more than a half-mile high on the east coast of the Arabian peninsula. Austrialia's Emerystudio, the firm designing the building's wayfinding systems—the signage that directs visitors around the huge structure—wanted to employ Arabic typography that'd be distinctive, legible, and harmonious when placed next to Latin lettering.

What to do in Dubai?

0
Dubai may be the preserve of the rich or the playboy or the paid-for, because if you want to live like a King or Sheikh here, you can. The sky is literally the limit and you can even see that, the world's tallest building The Burj Khalifa, which towers over the Seawings seaplane piloted by Captain Per Korsvold flying at 1,500 ft and which takes off out of the Jebel Ali marina. But you get what you pay for and Dubai doesn't do second-rate.
