The Dubai Government yesterday took over Dubai Bank, an Islamic bank owned by Dubai Holding and Emaar Properties, ending several months of speculation on the future and financial strength of the bank.

President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan received His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Their Highnesses Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates on Thursday on the occasion of the UAE’s National Day.

Dubai boasts of a number of the world's biggest and tallest structures, not to mention having at least five Guinness world record entries within one square kilometre in Downtown Dubai. The Guinness World Records presented a plaque yesterday recognising ‘At.mosphere' as the world's ‘Highest Restaurant from Ground Level".

"Although I'm known for climbing without safety [equipment] this is a different game because Burj Khalifa is much taller than any of the previous tallest buildings in the world." For this reason he has opted to climb the world's current tallest building, which stands at 828 metres, using a rope and harness.

Gulf News had earlier reported that the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest structure, is supported by a large reinforced concrete mat, which is in turn supported by bored reinforced concrete piles. The design is based on extensive geotechnical and seismic investigations and analysis.

The Burj Khalifa observation deck has been temporarily closed for "maintenance and upgrade". A spokesperson for Burj Khalifa, said: "Due to unexpected high traffic, the observation deck experience at the Burj Khalifa, At the Top, has been temporarily closed for maintenance and upgrade.

Kingdom Holding Company, the Saudi Arabia-based developer, has awarded a $1.2 billion (Dh4.41 billion) contract to the country's Bin Laden Group for constructing the one-kilometre tall tower in Jeddah that is set to break Burj Khalifa's record as the world's tallest building.

Dubai: Few people in their right mind would look at an 828-metre tower and think, "I want to jump off that."
